Soave is a DOC wine production area in the northeast region of the Veneto, which is surrounding the area of Verona.
That’s right Verona – of Romeo and Juliet fame.
Producing dry whites from the tongue-twisting Garganega grape, these refreshing (and typically inexpensive) whites are a great choice when looking for a wallet friendly bottle of wine.
The Soave Classico wines are a more elegant expression of the region, make exclusively from the foothills of the region where the elevation and cool breezes contribute to the acidity of the zippy wines that are age-worthy, while the valley floor makes fun, fresh fruity wines good for early drinking.
To further confuse wine drinkers, the Soave Superiore DOCG designation was created in 2002 that specified vine training techniques and other viticulture practices. Suffice it to say, that rang a tad Napoleonic to the producers, and many left the Classico DOCG for the greener pastures of the Soave DOC.
This particular bottling is in a retro labeled bottle, to showcase the history of the wine and the 150-year-old story of Bertani. This beautiful wine comes from the hillside vineyards (while the import is labellied Soave vs Soave Classico) where the rocky soils and cooling trends of the elevation help maintain a freshness to the wine.
One of the interesting things about this Soave is that the grapes are harvested in two batches: the first, where 40% of the grapes are crushed early int eh season, for freshness and avidity, and the second 60% harvest later in the year, to add a boldness and texture.
This lovely wine is bursting with golden delicious apples and pear, and has pungent spice notes. The juicy nectarine and ripe melon are also refreshing, while the bright (some might say high, but I say medium +) acid leaves you wanting another sip.

I love the floral notes and intoxicating jasmine on the nose, and just a hint of Pomelo make this a refreshing drink with enough interesting spice and fruit to pair perfectly with a summer salad, grilled peaches or BBQ chicken.
